Ratib Al-Haddad ini mengambil nama dari nama penyusunnya, yaitu Imam Abdullah bin Alawi Al-Haddad, seorang pembaharu Islam (mujaddid) yang terkenal. Daripada doa-doa dan zikir-zikir karangan beliau, Ratib Al-Haddad lah yang paling terkenal dan masyhur. Ratib yang bergelar Al-Ratib Al-Syahir (Ratib Yang Termasyhur) disusun berdasarkan inspirasi, pada malam Lailatul Qadar 27 Ramadhan 1071 Hijriyah (bersamaan 26 Mei 1661). Ratib ini disusun bagi menunaikan permintaan salah seorang murid beliau, ‘Amir dari keluarga Bani Sa’d yang tinggal di sebuah kampung di Shibam, Hadhramaut. Tujuan ‘Amir membuat permintaan tersebut ialah untuk membentengi dengan suatu wirid dan zikir untuk amalan penduduk kampungnya agar mereka dapat mempertahan dan menyelamatkan diri daripada ajaran sesat yang sedang melanda Hadhramaut ketika itu.
